As a young German-Jewish refugee who had been wrenched out of a totally antagonistic youthful environment, the diversity of the midwestern culture provided by Taylorville overcame my early childhood traumas rapidly. My father Dr. Ottokar Beschloss, my mother and my older brother Max fled Germany after Hitler's persecution of the German Jewish population reached its climax with the Kristallnacht (night of the broken glass) pogrom of Nov. 9, 1938. I became School Board President for the last four years. For that basic "English" education, I want to thank the late Helen Broverman, both a lawyer and life-long literary and English teacher at Taylorville Township High School.
