Ella Mae, who normally gets her cousin Charlotte’s hand-me-down shoes, is excited at the prospect of getting brand new shoes from the shoe store because her feet have grown too much to wear Charlotte’s old ones now.

Set in early America, when blacks didn't have the same rights that whites did, this book tells the story of a pair of new shoes though the eyes of a little African-American girl. Overall, this book did a fantastic job addressing a complex subject and turning it into a story that young readers will be able to understand. This book is perfect to teach to younger elementary grades and even older grades. Rather than wallow in misery over something that she is too young to change, she and her cousin Charlotte do chores to earn extra money or used shoes, and then open their own used shoe store where other African Americans can actually try on shoes before buying them. She was frustrated and didn’t really understand why it was different for her.

While she is used to wearing her siblings old shoes, she is finally able to get a pair of her own, and she is so excited.
